Gulp. I just sent this note.

Good afternoon, Ms. Kindergarten Teacher!

Jacob has been talking a lot about the mice in your classroom lately. He told me a week or so ago that you offered to give them to him after the school year. Is that true? If so, would you be willing to let us have a trial run of caring for the mice over spring break?

Jake is really pulling hard for this at home, so I want to make sure that we all have the same understanding. I am not familiar with mice as pets at all and so am unwilling to just say yes to him. So if adopting the mice is a possibility, then fostering the mice might be a good idea.

Thanks!

Christy

UPDATE: Eeek!! It's not a misunderstanding. So I guess we'll be mice-sitting after Easter.

We had a chance to host our kid's classroom guinea pig when we lived in Japan. I'm afraid we declined: we had cats at the time, and I didn't trust my kids not to open the cage and try to make cats & rodent 'be friends'. Mice are cute, but be strong: don't agree to permanent mice guests!

Oh, guinea pigs are mean! I would have declined too!

I'm actually very open to the idea of having mice for pets. Nick is somewhat less open. I'm sort of hoping that the spring break visit pushes one or the other of us to change our mind. We've been sorely missing having a pet since we put our cat down the summer before last. It's time to move on. So even if we decide against the mice, we'll likely choose another pet anyway.

I'm actually quite surprised the teacher would put something like that into a child's head without consulting the parents.

That's not particularly unusual, unfortunately. Especially not for teachers that don't have kids. It's ok, though. This is Jake's teacher from two years ago so she knows him and she knows us. And she did tell Jake that he had to get our permission first. It would have been nice if she had talked to me first but that rarely happens.

we were the care takers of a turtle over last summer. Annalisa was the last one in her class to be picked up so we were "lucky" enough to take care of Chessie.

The idea has already been placed in her head to watch it again this summer, since she did such a great job. *sigh

Oh, my gosh, Christy, you are a brave and daring soul. I kind of feel guilty that I wouldn't have even entertained the thought before telling him flat out no. But then, as I look around at the dog hair in the house, I stop feeling guilty. I currently have the maximum number of things I can keep alive. Adding more is a recipe for disaster.

I think the bottom line is actually going to be a dog! Nick and I have been tossing it around for a while and we can't agree on what kind, but I think the threat of a mouse is pushing him toward being more agreeable. I hope.
